[27]***Determining the Year
A bit of the script didn't quite make it to the big screen but was included in the novelisation. A news report says Sylvester Stallone died at the age of 97 from complications of a failed head transplant. This dates the story to 2043 or 2044. BTW, the RoboCop remake will be set in 2046.

RoboCop is an odd type of Cyber Punk. First off, it is pro-authority. Law enforcement are not just the good guys, their ideals and goals are shared by the protagonist and the audience is expected to root for this authority. Robocop dispenses justice against anti-authority punk criminals and usurping authorities. The megacorporation in the story really isn't, yet. Their doing all they can to become an all-powerful above-the-law entity, but their not there yet. In fact, the story, and one of the main enemies of it are a product of of this struggle. Their first step is too buy the Detroit police department. Not bribery, they literally buy it. The organisation, buildings, equipment, and yes, even the people become property of OCP. They hope to create a force of robot to assert authority Detroit. The goal of both protagonist and the megacorpaeration is to fight crime, but only on the surface. Each is actually motivated to enforce authority. OCP's Cyber Punk motives are hampered by a punk. Note the protagonist, RoboCop, is not the punk. The punk in the RoboCop story is actually a middle-executive of the would-be megacorporation, Bob Morton. He's not a software hacker, he's a hardware hacker. He augments Alex Murphy's body to create RoboCop. RoboCop then does all the software hacking in the story, including hacking his own digital and biological software. It eventually takes a bit of social engineering to allow his biological moral code to direct actions that were not allowed by his digital moral code. The decisive battle was not in the streets, it took place in the mind of a cyborg. Digital life vs biological life. Digital life was not defeated, it merely took its rightful place and allowed biological life to take action. Robocop is really its more of a transhumanism story. A struggle to skip dystopian Cyber Punk by transitioning directly into Post Cyber Punk transhumanism where flesh and circuitry coexist for the betterment of mankind. Where the joined machine-man saves us from a dystopian future by preventing the rise of the megacorporation. Robocop a transhumanist messiah. Killed for supporting justice. Raised from the dead. First of the new man exerting proper authority to deliver the world from crime and undesired authority.

A Contra style game staring Fidel Castro and Che Guevara fight side-by-side to topple the Batista dictatorship in Cuba, 1950. No, I'm not kidding. Of course only the Japanese version is so revolutionary. The versions published elsewhere changed the names to protect the revolutionaries. True story by-the-way. In the real invasion a mere 82 men crammed into one passenger boat invaded Cuba, facing an army and air force. 17 survived the initial battle including Castro's brother. Several of their men were discovered to be spys or in desperation had attempted to betray their fellows. These were exicuted. In this game, the invasion force is reduced to Castro and Che. "Che" is a Cuban word that means "Hey You". Much like the real life situation, Che is the main character doing the dirty work while Castro is the secondary character. In Japan, this game is called "Guevara War".

"Dr. Chaos" is an unusual action/platform game that reminded me of Konami's [game=#8335]The Goonies II[/game], because in both games you can explore special rooms in first-person-style adventure mode. In Dr. Chaos these rooms are only for finding extra weapons and ammo as well as the entries to warp zones. In those zones you make your way from left to right, kill a boss, collect a part of a super-weapon, and finally - and thats not really nice - walk back to the entrance of the zone in search for the next zone. The game is only average in graphics and music. It is playable, there are no control problems. But the game feels a bit repetitive. The warp zones are too similar, a few more graphical themes would have been nice. The adventure rooms look bland and undetailed and mainly consist of trying to open everything and hitting all the walls for finding hidden passages. Besides a few musical differences, the NES version is pretty much identical to the Famicom Disk System version.***A platformer with a twist, three different styles of play include traversing the main house, exploring the roooms in a faux 3d view, and finally platform jumping (and mutant killing) in alternate dimensions. labelimageminimize

Ruthless gold-stealing bandits are terrorizing the townsfolk and it's up to you to stop them! The thieves are notorious killers, and when they challenge you to a draw, they're playing for keeps! Although your gunslinging prowess is legendary, this may be the toughest High Noon you'll ever face. But you've got to stand your ground - this town ain't big enough for both you and them!***

[33]***"Gun.Smoke" is a playable Commando-style run and gun game in a western setting. You play a lonesome gunslinger on his mission to stop a gang of bandits of terrorizing peaceful villagers. Graphics, sound and are decent. The game is relatively easy compared to other games of that era and controls are fine. The game has a small shopping feature where you can upgrade your standard weapon with money from money bags you collect on the way. "Strangest" gameplay element is the exclusively diagonal shooting from the hero, but after you get used to it it works well enough.***

[1]***On the one hand "Metal Gear" is a classic, introducing stealth elements into the action-adventure genre and the first game in one of the most successful and acclaimed videogame series ever. Graphics are nice and controls are good. However there are numerous small and bigger gameplay issues. First of all its pretty difficult with lots of trial and error scenes (sudden pitfalls). The inventory and item management is not very good. Example: In order to open doors you must acquire key cards. There are up to eight cards. To open a door with it you have to activate the card. So when you stand before a new door you must constantly switch between all cards until you have found the right one. Also the constant respawn of enemies once you return into another screen is something I disliked. The game has some sort of story (mostly told by radio calls), but I expected a bit more in this regard.***

Intelligence sources believe they have discovered a hidden POW camp deep in the jungle. Your brothers in arms have been enslaved there for years. It's your choice: accept a suicide mission to find the camp, or spend the rest of your life in a 6' by 8' cell.

Your body is a weapon. Your mind, a disciplined machine. The most advanced military hardware is at your disposal, and a chopper waits to carry you to the drop site, where once again, you will be alone deep in hostile territory.

This is your war, Rambo. A war that will test your every skill. A war with only two possible results: freedom or death.

Armed and alone, you parachute into enemy territory.

[33]***This game gets lots of hate from players, but I think this one is actually pretty average. There are some elements that I don't like. Most of the fights, especially at the beginning is against wildlife, the whole side-scrolling knive-stabbing action is not as typical Rambo-like as other more standard Run and Gun style top-down shooters of other Rambo versions in the 80s. While not a better game per se, the C64 Rambo game from Ocean just fit the Rambo style much better. The character also looks a bit goofy and is not really well animated. On the plus side must be noted that they tried to tell a story. When I compare this to other NES games released in or before 1987 this one does pretty well in the story section and its not your typical fantasy scenario that often came with such kind of Action-Adventure titles.***This game is based on them movie Rambo: First Blood Part II.

This is a Zelda II clone. In Japan, Zelda II for the Famicom Disk System was released about 11 months before the Famicom version of Rambo. The Famicom version of Rambo has a level layout very similar to Zelda II. The USA version reduces the similarity be rearranging the levels a bit.

Lots of diverse levels. And you can switch between controlling Lupin or his friends Jigen and Goemon, each one with special abilities. Lupin can use special gimmicks, Jigen is the best shooter and Goemons sword destroys things otherwise indestructable. You can choose between one of three different characters (explorer, priest and esper) each with its own life and "holy" stat bonuses and different attacks/weapons. The way is often blocked by doors which need the appropriate key and there are also very few adventure/puzzle elements with hints hiding in bonus items. You explore a forest and underground caves in search for three orbs guarded by evil bosses to ultimately rescue a fairy kingdom. Well, Spelunker II is a bit better than its predecessor, but still the controls aren't the best. The most annoying thing about this game is the knockback effect you get from touching enemies which feels like pushing you back a quarter of the screen. That makes the knockback in games like Castlevania feel very tame in comparison. The levels have a rather complicated layout with exits not only to the left and right but also up and down and often strangely connected paths. But that seems to be typical for a Famicom/NES game of that time, probably hoping to sell more hint books in Japan *ahem*.*** labelimageminimize

The developers tried to bring variety into the game, with quite different locations, some "puzzles" and levels that run vertically. However the final product feels very very buggy, badly animated and difficult. And particularly bad design decisions like the barriers at the end of the first stage, which can only be opened by firing and continuously hop from a certain stone to another stone. [37]***"Robo Warrior" (or "Bomber King" in Japan") is a kind of spin-off to Hudson's earlier "Bomber-Man" game. It enhances the gameplay by various elements and it is a mixture of the first solo-only Bomberman gameplay and Action-Adventure type game. The premise is simple. Walk from left to right, find the hidden key at the end of the level which opens the exit door. However, while the game plays rather well there are some annoying typical old-school gameplay elements in place. First a super-harsh time-limit. Your energy goes constantly down except you find hidden energy/battery symbols. Many bombable blocks are hidden as normal non-destroyable blocks. Some stages loop endlessly unless you find a certain item etc. Virtually necessary extra items are often too well hidden. Many secrets are not necessarily bad for a game, but only when they are more or less optional, not when they become essential and when your constant low energy level makes you fear to explore the levels slowly. Could have been really good with a fairer difficulty level. Graphically its simple but ok. Not many different graphical layouts and quite a lot of color-swapping. The music is catchy enough.

The game features eight levels each of them taking place inside an asteroid, first in a cavern system, then in the fortress itself. The game's box describes it as a maze action game. And a maze it really is, at least in the fortress sections. Many floors hideously connected with lots of elevators, ruthless monsters and not much room to maneuver. It is one of those games that makes you realize how much more difficult games were back in 1986. So, there you have your top-view running around in the city scenes, where you kick and stab innocent looking citizens to gain money. Additionally there are locations where the game switches to side-view platform scenes, which have terrible controls. And everytime! you beat one of the numerous evil looking humans the game stops and gives you a text message which might be some kind of hints. And everything in this game, all items and clues are very well hidden. Yes, I admit that many old games had things very well hidden on the brink of unfairness, but at least they had acceptable controls. The music is an extremely annoying high-pitched something. So eventually (if you happen to play this game for longer than 5 minutes) you might buy a trip to the next city for more unplayable action goodness. That is not only because you are constantly attacked and several grenade throwing enemies are extremely unfair, but also because of the bad controls. The first two levels have a jungle theme and the last two levels you are in a kind of enemy base. [52]***I really liked the C64 version of Commando (which C64 user doesn't remember that awesome music?), so I was really curious how the NES version would play. Commando is an early Run and Gun game, one of the genre defining games so to say, originally released in the arcades and converted to virtually every homecomputer possible. The NES version is an interesting version and playable, it even has a new feature. Throwing grenades at some places reveals otherwise hidden stairs which you can climb down and enter extra mini-rooms sometimes filled with enemies but often also having extra items in them. But the game fails to be as good as it could have been. The music doesn't drive me forward as it did in the C64 version. The graphics are adequate for a 1986 game but there is often much flickering. Sometimes enemy soldiers just disappear completely from the screen. The game has only four short levels, but despite this it is rather difficult.***Publish in Japan, 1986-09-27
